Admission Requirements for Finnish High Schools

Age and Educational Background:
Finnish upper secondary education (lukio) is generally designed for students aged 16–19. Applicants must have completed compulsory lower secondary education in their home country.

Language Proficiency:
Most Finnish high schools teach in Finnish or Swedish, though some private and international schools offer programs in English.
Students may demonstrate Finnish proficiency through a language certificate or a school’s own placement exam. English-medium programs typically require B2-level English.

Academic Records:
Applicants must provide a lower secondary school diploma, a transcript of grades, and other relevant documents. Some schools select students based on grade averages.

Motivation and References:
Some schools may request a motivation letter explaining the student’s interests and goals. Teacher or school references can further support the application.

Health and Adaptation:
Applicants should be in good health and capable of completing full-time education. Some schools offer preparatory classes to support language and social integration.

Financial and Legal Requirements:
While education is tuition-free, students must cover living expenses. For non-EU/EEA students, obtaining a student residence permit after receiving an acceptance letter is mandatory.

  • Classes are held three days per week, two hours per day.
  • Courses follow the CEFR framework, progressing from A1 to A2 level.
  • Students learn basic grammar, everyday communication, and academic vocabulary.
Interactive lessons, assignments, and individual progress tracking ensure steady improvement.
This phase ensures that students arrive in Finland with a strong linguistic foundation.

Phase 2 – On-Campus Learning (4 Months)
The second phase takes place in person at the Huvitus Campus.

  • Students reside on campus and enjoy three daily meals, snacks, and internet access.
  • Intensive Finnish lessons: four days per week, five hours per day.
  • Academic, cultural, and personal development sessions: one day per week.

By the end of the program, students advance from A2 to B1 level in Finnish while improving speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills.
